It all starts with ice.
In 1946, E. Maynard Graffam Sr. and his partners formed our parent company Penobscot Bay Ice Co., Inc. The business cut ice on Lily Pond and delivered it to the residents of Rockport. Ever the entrepreneur, Maynard expanded the operation to include a lobster shipping plant, Maine Coast Seafood, on Rockport Harbor. From the start, he bought live fresh lobsters from local fishermen.
A family tradition.
After Maynard’s death in 1969, his sons Jimmy and Sandy took over the business and renamed it Graffam Bros. Its name reminds us daily of the tradition of quality and service Jimmy and Sandy learned from their dad. Sandy’s daughter Kimberlee followed him into the firm and helped bring the company into the retail business by establishing Graffam Bros. Seafood Market—where the next generation of Graffams can often be found helping out.
Market Fresh Across the Country.
The market’s reputation for providing high-quality, ocean-fresh seafood brought requests from customers for a place to order cooked meals. Visitors from near and far now flock to the Graffam Bros. Seafood Shack—right across the street from the market—for traditional coastal Maine fare.
