Moxie is the official soft drink of Maine!

You either love or hate Moxie. There is no inbetween.  All Mainers know Moxie and it pairs perfectly with a Lobster Roll on a hot summer day.

Created in 1876 as a nerve food medicine by Union Maine native Augustin Thompson he later added soda water to the recipe and sold it in soda fountains.  In 1885, he received a trademark for the term. He marketed it as “a delicious blend of bitter and sweet, a drink to satisfy everyone’s taste.”

Thompson claimed that he named the beverage after a Lieutenant Moxie a friend of his who he claimed had discovered the plant and used it as a medicine, and the company he created continued to promulgate legendary stories about the word’s origin. It likely derives from an Abenaki language word that means “dark water” and that is found in lake and river names in Maine.

20oz plastic bottle. Price includes 5cent Maine bottle deposit.
